What you are actually paying for

• The control valve — the brain that meters water and triggers regeneration
• Resin volume, measured in cubic feet, sized to your hardness and household
• The brine tank and safety float
• Installation labor, fittings, bypass valve and drain line
• Permits where required, and haul-off of old equipment

Equipment tiers

Entry-level big-box units

Cheapest up front. Proprietary parts, thinner resin, and service usually means replacing the whole unit. Fine for a small condo, frustrating for a family of five on 18 gpg water.

Mid-tier metered softeners
